Did you know that when you enter the place of rest in your life you enter the “promised land”?
I don’t know about you, but I find it very difficult to be still and at rest. At least I am better now than I used to be; it seemed I always was pushing myself to do or perform. However, God has taken me to the depths of despair at times to find a deep rest In Him. How am I doing now? If I goof off and just do nothing? That’s just fine and dandy with me…believe it or not.
In one way or another we often feel we have to “do warfare”, “fight demons” or “pray through.” That may not always be God. He may want us to just stand or sit still and defeat the battle by just being at rest, like Gideon, Joshua and many others. Gideon stood still and defeated the enemy by following God’s orders to blow their rams’ horns and breaktheir clay jars. And to their amazement the whole enemy camp began to panic and kill each other. The enemy is a looser!
21 Each man stood at his position around the camp and watched as all the Midianites rushed around in a panic, shouting as they ran to escape. 22 When the 300 Israelites blew their rams’ horns, the Lord caused the warriors in the camp to fight against each other with their swords. Those who were not killed fled to places as far away as Beth-shittah…(Judges 7:21)
When a person has learned to rest, he ceases from his own works (especially performance). It is God that is doing the work anyway, so we may as well “go along for the ride” as He does battle for us and frees us from the enemy’s attacks. So often as we try to help Him out by “making it happen,” we get ourselves in such a mess. Why don’t we just learn to rest in His arms and let Him deal with the situation.
I think maybe that is the reason He comes to the rescue quickly to people who are weak and dependent on Him. I am thinking of a newborn baby who is so dependent on His parents and does not need to work for anything… he just receives.
Israel was a nation whose heart and thoughts were far from God. He said they would never enter into His rest.
How is it with your heart today? Are you far from God in your heart, or do you walk in His rest? The Lord is glorified through you as you walk in His promised land.
When we cease from our business and accomplishments we come to a point of surrender. The storms of life will not affect us as we sail the ocean of difficulties. Our anxiety will drown in the bottom of the ocean and our boat gets to its destination while we observe His miracles of freedom.
I hear Jesus say, “You do not have to make things happen, for that is not your calling. You will become as stable and unmovable as a rock when you rest yourself on The Rock. I amable to perform the task in front of you through My Spirit alone. Let Me.”
