Do you have a hard time shutting your mouth like I do? Or do you wish you were able to think things through before you answered?
Well, join the crowd. I believe if we are honest we all feel that way at times, or perhaps all the time?
Sometimes we feel we have a lot of things to say to people, but they just do not seem to have the capacity to hear and comprehend. Jesus said to His disciples, “I have many more things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now. But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose to you what is to come.” (John 16:12-13)
Did you notice that Jesus said that after the Holy Spirit– the Spirit of Truth– would come, then the disciples would be guided into the truth of what Jesus was saying and they would understand?
Can we draw the conclusion that when we are in the Spirit we will know what Jesus is saying and we will be able to “bear it” and will understand as He understands?
The disciples were with Him day and night, and yet, in many instances they did not have a clue what Jesus was saying. Well, this makes me feel a bit better. Yet I feel sad that so many times He wants to share things with me, but I cannot bear it. Why? Could it be because I am not “in the Spirit” but in the soul (flesh)?
So when we have received a revelation (for our own life or the life of the other person) that is life-changing and we are bursting to reveal it to people, it may not always be the right time, and God is charging us to keep it to ourselves. Therefore, we need to shut our mouth and be quiet. Woooo, that is hard! And yet it can be totally from God. Jesus said, “Tell no man what things they had seen” until basically they had experienced an encounter with the Holy Spirit of Truth. Is it not the Holy Spirit who reveals things to people and not we ourselves anyway? So, “Come Holy Spirit and reveal to us Your plans. Only then will we be your mouthpiece.”
When we allow God to fill our heart with the Holy Spirit, His fire will come from us and the right words will flow out of us, like the river that is depicted below. We will know when to let Him speak through us and when to just be still. I hear Jesus say, “It is only by My Spirit that you can understand My ways and be able to share them with a world that is dying around you. My Spirit will teach you when to be still and when to speak.”
