Do you have a difficult time hearing exactly what God tells you?

I am amazed at how the prophets in the Old Testament obeyed God to the fullest degree and said exactly what God instructed them to say. Somehow they knew in their hearts that God absolutely meant what He said. It would have been easy for them to add or subtract from His words, but they feared the God of the universe and did not dare alter or put their own spin on His words.

Take Ezekiel the prophet. The Living Bible says: “Go, imprison yourself in your house, and I will paralyze you so you can’t leave; and I will make your tongue stick to the roof of your mouth so that you can’t reprove them; for they are rebels. But whenever I give you a message, I will loosen your tongue and let you speak.” Ezekiel 3:24-27

Then God continued to give him instructions in the next chapter: “Now lie on your left side for 390 days, to show Israel that they will be punished for 390 years by captivity and doom. Each day you lie there will represent a year of punishment ahead for Israel. Afterward, turn over and lie on your right side for forty days, to signify the years of Judah’s punishment. Each day will represent one year…and I will paralyze you so that you can’t turn over from one side to the other until you have completed all the days of your siege.” Ezekiel 4:4-8 (Living Bible) The Lord made sure Ezekiel followed all His instructions to a T. If not, his tongue would stick to the roof of his mouth.

When I read accounts like this I make sure that I say and do exactly what God tells me while I do prophetic art in church. There is a tendency in all of us to make things more impressive and add our own “two bits” to the words He transmits, and that is not what He intends for us to do.

It makes you sit up and take notice when God says that if we add anything to His words the plagues that are described in the Bible may come upon us. If we subtract from His words we may not inherit heaven itself. That is a strict warning. (Revelation 22:18-19)

In prophetic art (see note at the end of this article about what prophetic art is) we can also let ourselves be influenced by the atmosphere we walk into, and this may in turn determine how we draw or represent a picture God has given us and how to describe it. People may seem religious, there may be a lack of unity, you may feel some intimidation, or simply because you are doing something they are not used to, you may sense resistance. This can be a test for a sensitive artist to be swayed and to step into a different direction than God intended. We need to learn to step back into God and say, “Lord, what are You saying?  Help me to be still and hear Your voice above all the noise and the disturbance.”

We are not called to be influenced by people or circumstances. “…Only if you return to trusting Me will I let you continue as My spokesman. You are to influence them, not them influence you.” Jeremiah 15:19 (Living Bible)

At times God may ask you to give a rather difficult word, and you may want to shrink back and sugarcoat the words, for it may seem too much for people to handle. However, there are ways of getting the words across in a loving and gentle, yet firm, way so as not to offend people. “A soft tongue can break hard bones.” Proverbs 25:15 (Living Bible)

The closer we are bonded to Him, the clearer we hear His voice. If you are at a point today you find it hard to distinguish His voice from all that is going on in your life, step back into Him and allow Him to love on you. Be honest in telling Him how far away you feel from His presence. You draw one inch to Him and He will come instantly to rescue you out of your condition. Has He not said in Luke 20: 42, 43 that He will make a footstool out of your enemies? So don’t let the enemy boss you around, for Jesus is your only boss for sure. Put on your favorite bootsDSC00827 and step on the enemy’s head! You are the winner if you follow His instructions.

I hear Jesus say:” It is easy to hear my voice: I speak through every thing that I have created for my glory. You are invited to hear my still small voice, my lion’s roaring or the rustling of my wings – all will speak to you and through you and draw you closer to Me, so you can hear deeper and better to become the conqueror I designed you to be.”
